Turkey - Day Zero
I stayed up until 5:30am packing and still had a lot more to do. My mom and I got pedicures at 11am for an early Mother's Day outing, then I had about 3 hours to pack before go time. Turns out I didn't know what all to bring and wound up packing a lot.

The parents got to my place, some advice was given, and some readjustment of bags occurred. We left, I made it through security, and I was on my way to Turkey, an excited bundle of joy.

Why Turkey, you ask? In case you don't know the details, for the past 7 weeks I've been working with 18 of my GW MBA classmates and our awesome professor, Dr. Liesel Riddle, on a consulting project for the Turkish apparel industry. Before 2005, many countries had limits to the number of textiles and apparel they were allowed to export. In 2005, these quotas were lifted, and China suddenly took over, dominating the global apparel industry. (Look at how much of your clothing says "Made in China"). So we're trying to help Turkey get its competitive edge back.
Specifically, I'm working with 3 of my classmates to determine how the change in the US Administration (OBAMA CHANGE) might affect Turkey. We've interviewed people at the US Trade Representatives (USTR) Office and the Office of Textiles and Apparel. We've looked at what specific sectors (cotton t-shirts vs silk blouses) have suffered and which might have opportunities for growth. We're trying to guess whether Turkey has a shot at a free trade agreement with the U.S. We have a 40+ page working document of a deliverable report to pass along to out client, ITKIB, the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters Association, and a power point yet to be made. We present on Friday the 15th.
It's been really stressful and interesting, especially since the USTR was only appointed once we were halfway through the module and the trade policy is a work in progress, and it seems like Obama's got other things on his mind, aside from Turkish apparel. But we're all really excited about this incredible opportunity.
OH AND DID I MENTION I'VE NEVER BEEN ABROAD BEFORE?!
So after the project ends on May 20, I'm sticking around for another 9 days for a sweet vacation before coming back to the States and starting my internship on June 3. But I'll save those details for later.
